5 Questions with Dr. Clyde T. Jacob III

1. Why did you want to become a doctor?

When I was 13 years old, my grandfather passed away from cancer. Watching what this did to my mother and family was painful and agonizing, it made me feel helpless. While difficult to understand it later motivated me to want to prevent this from happening in the future. It was because of the traumatic experience of watching a family member die when I was 13 years of age that I discovered I wanted to become a physician.

2. Why Obstetrics and Gynecology?

I chose obstetrics and gynecology after having a wonderful medical school rotation. The following year, I did a sub-internship in obstetrics and found my calling performing the surgical aspects of OB/GYN, delivering babies, and delivering high-quality women’s care.

3.  What has been one of the most rewarding experiences as a physician?

One of the most rewarding experiences allowed me to travel to Tanzania and Nicaragua on medical missions. I learned so much about myself as well as contributing to people in true need. In Tanzania, I learned about how little we actually need as humans versus the things that we want. Those experiences, I believe, grounded me with respect to having a deep understanding of the differences between need and want and helped me better appreciate the importance of service to others.

4. What do you enjoy most about working with patients?

I enjoy my job. Most importantly, I enjoy being the calming presence my patients need in an emotionally charged and sometimes chaotic delivery room or operating room.

5. What are your hobbies outside of work?

I enjoy spending time with my family at home. As a father, our daughter is the main focus of our lives. I believe having a child makes you a better obstetrician because you better understand the emotions involved during pregnancy as well as future concerns.
