Emory Gynecology and Obstetrics Accepts the Challenge to Be Well

Healthcare providers are not immune to the risks of burnout. ACOG Wellness Week is designed to challenge women’s health providers to focus on the five areas of wellness: physical, emotional, spiritual, environmental, and social.

Dr. Cherie Hill, the wellness ambassador for the Emory Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, with support from the Resident Wellness Committee (Allison Mayhew, MD; Nina Metcalfe, MD, MS; Ying Liu, MD; Amy Ottensmeyer, MD; Mallory Youngstrom, MD; and Brooke Hyman, MD) developed a weeklong calendar of events for the department to enjoy. If you search the tag #EmoryGynObWell online, you will see activities focused on education around work-life balance, building community, and getting your body moving.

On day one faculty, residents, and friends met at VibeRide in Midtown Atlanta for a music-fueled and sweat-drenched hour of cardio cycling.

Day two was all about emotional wellness and building personal resilience, whether through expressing gratitude to a colleague or mentor or spending some time to write a 55-word story or journaling.

On day three we started our morning highlighting the importance of spiritual wellness and managing stress. Our newest Resident Wellness Committee member intern Dr. Brooke Hyman led the guided meditation before our grand rounds. Harnessing the power of the Healthy Emory Connect, we encouraged people to skip the elevators and take the stairs and to consider walking instead of driving on day four. All of these actions help us to care for our community and our environment. Because the Healthy Emory Connect app allows users to sync various trackers our department was able to join in the competitive fun and compete for the most steps accumulated in the challenge.

The last day of the week is all about social wellness; building connections and connecting with your tribe. Translation? Karaoke night at Decatur Music Project.  We accepted the challenge to BE WELL in 2019 and at the end of this week focused on wellness we are encouraging continuing these habits to combat physical, emotional or spiritual burnout.
